A classic way to climb Azhdahak, with 3.600 metres above the sea level the highest mountain of Geghama mountain range. The trail starts at the village of Geghard, winds the stunning mountain plateau strewn with cones of dormant volcanoes just to descend to Lake Akna and the village of Sevaberd.

During the time of our visit (the end of May) there was still quite a lot of snow on the ground and the necessity to cross huge plains of frozen yet thawing snow carrying 17kg+ backpacks significantly added to the overall difficulty rating. Otherwise than that the trek is quite easy (yet long) and does not feature any technically demanding parts.
You can raise a tent virtually anywhere you like as there’s a plenty of rivulets and mountain streams running down the slopes of the plateau especially during the spring/summer thaw.

You’ll have to take taxi to reach Geghard while Sevaberd is being serviced by daily marshrutkas heading to Abovyan on the afternoons (4pm).
