Description de l'itinéraire
An interesting day hike through some rather unusual mountains not far from Tbilisi. The terrain here is mostly made up of pebbles and clay, which erodes quickly and creates entire "rivers" of stones in each of the small valleys. We followed one of these up to the highest point. The ascent is very gradual.
At the top, we were met with strong winds, strange erosion-sculpted hills, grassy patches, tussocks, and a number of abandoned summer cottages and shepherd huts. There are lots of dirt roads up there, and it’s common to run into off-road enthusiasts in jeeps.
Our descent felt pretty long and a bit boring, mostly following a road. Just below the Church of Saint Panteleimon, a large tourist shelter is currently under construction. The shelter itself is complete, but the workers are still finishing up the surrounding area and are currently spending the nights there. There's also a gazebo and a toilet nearby, but we didn’t come across a water source. Down in Sagarejo, I was told there’s a ranger station.
This route could be part of a longer loop around the Mariamdjvari Nature Reserve, or even an extended trek along the Tsivi Ridge.
