An amazing climb/hike near Glenorchy that on a clear day gives you incredible 360 degree views of the area. The start is at a small car park on the east side of the road that takes you to the Routeburn Track (one of New Zealand's great walks). You start off in the woods on a trail that has a lot of downed trees which makes it tough to make headway. When the forest section is complete you come out onto clearing where the official trail ends. Look for poles with orange markers heading up the side of the mountain. This was a difficult section with a steep climb over loose scree and made slippery with mud and melting snow. Hiking poles really helped in this section.

When you get to the top of the ridge line, to the right/south there are amazing views of the Dart River and Lake Wakatipu. With the tough part of the climb done we took our time heading north along the ridge line (for about 1.2 km) to the summit and even more spectacular views.

Leave yourself plenty of time (a round trip is 4 to 6 hours), hiking poles recommended (or gloves for scrambling up the rock face). Difficult in spots and a lot of elevation to climb in a day but the views at the top are breathtaking.

You are out of the forest section. A tough scramble up to the ridge line is next.
